  • While winters in California are milder than in most places, rain, cooler temperatures, and coastal humidity can still take a toll on your Harley-Davidson. Whether you're riding year-round or storing your bike for spring, giving it proper care during the winter months is crucial for maintaining its performance and longevity. Follow these expert tips to keep your Harley in top shape all season long.

Keep Your Bike Clean and Protected

California’s rainy season and coastal salt air can lead to rust and corrosion if your bike isn’t cleaned regularly. After every ride, wash your Harley to remove dirt, debris, and moisture-prone buildup. Dry it thoroughly to prevent rust, especially around the undercarriage, wheels, and chrome.

For extra protection, apply a layer of wax or polish to your bike’s paint and metal surfaces. This creates a barrier against moisture and keeps your Harley looking great.

Pro Tip: Store your bike with a breathable motorcycle cover to shield it from dust and moisture without trapping condensation. Avoid using plastic tarps, which can cause rust.

    Monitor Your Battery Health

Colder temperatures can drain your motorcycle battery, especially if it sits unused for weeks. Invest in a battery tender or trickle charger to keep the battery charged during downtime. This ensures your bike is ready to fire up when the weather warms.

    Maintain Proper Tire Care

Temperature changes can cause tire pressure to drop, so check your tires frequently throughout the winter. Keep them inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended levels for optimal performance. If your bike will be sitting for an extended period, use a motorcycle stand to lift the tires off the ground and avoid flat spots.

    Use a Fuel Stabilizer

If you’re riding less often during the winter, add a fuel stabilizer to your tank to prevent the gas from degrading and clogging the fuel system. After adding the stabilizer, run the engine for a few minutes to distribute it throughout the system.

    Check and Replace Fluids

Winter is a great time to change your bike’s oil and inspect other fluids. Old oil can contain contaminants that harm your engine during long storage periods. Replace the oil and filter and top off brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid to keep your Harley running smoothly.

    Prepare for Rainy Rides

If you’re planning to ride during California’s rainy winter months, make sure your bike is equipped for wet conditions. Check that your tires have good tread for traction and that your brakes are responsive. Also, ensure your lights, signals, and horn are functioning properly for safety in low-visibility conditions.

Invest in waterproof riding gear and always be cautious of road hazards like standing water or debris.

    Store Your Bike Properly

For long-term storage, choose a dry, sheltered location like a garage. A high-quality, breathable cover is essential even indoors to protect your bike from dust and moisture.

  • Purchasing your first motorcycle is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming if you’re unsure where to start. With so many options, it’s crucial to understand what factors to consider before choosing. At Rod's Cycles in Pasadena, CA, we specialize in pre-owned Harley-Davidson motorcycles, providing expert guidance to help you find the perfect ride. Here’s what you need to know when buying your first motorcycle.

Choosing the right type of motorcycle

Motorcycles come in many different types, from cruisers and sportbikes to touring bikes and dirt bikes. For beginners, choosing a motorcycle that fits their riding style and experience level is essential. At Rod’s Cycles, our pre-owned Harley-Davidson selection offers various bikes, including cruisers, which are perfect for new riders due to their comfortable riding position and ease of handling. Understanding the bike’s purpose—for commuting, long-distance touring, or weekend joyrides—will help you narrow your choices.

    Consider the cost of ownership

While the thrill of riding is priceless, the cost of your first motorcycle is not. Budgeting for a motorcycle includes the purchase price and additional expenses like insurance, maintenance, gear, and accessories. One of the benefits of shopping for pre-owned motorcycles at Rod's Cycles is that you can find high-quality, well-maintained bikes at a fraction of the cost of a new model. We take pride in offering competitive prices on all our pre-owned Harley-Davidsons, helping you make an informed and budget-conscious decision.

    Understand engine size and power

A common mistake first-time buyers make is purchasing a motorcycle that is too powerful for their skill level. While the allure of a high-powered engine is strong, it’s important to find a bike that matches your experience. Rod’s Cycles offers a range of engine sizes, and our team can help you select a model that provides the right balance of power and control for a beginner. For instance, pre-owned Harley-Davidson models like the Iron 883 have smaller engines, making them great choices for those starting out.

    Maintenance and upkeep

Proper motorcycle maintenance is essential for safety and longevity. Regular servicing includes oil changes, tire checks, brake inspections, and chain lubrication, which should be done at intervals recommended by the manufacturer. Keep an eye on fluid levels, such as coolant and brake fluid, and ensure that your lights and electrical systems function correctly. Additionally, inspecting your bike before every ride can prevent minor issues from becoming costly repairs. Learning basic upkeep is vital for new riders to enjoy a safe and smooth riding experience.

Shop local to get the best deal

Local dealers, like Rod's Cycle Shop, not only offer personalized service but can also provide a better deal on used motorcycles. You’ll be able to check out the bike in person and ask questions directly to a knowledgeable team—Rod's offers financing options to help you get on the road faster.

  • Harley-Davidson has a long history of innovation in engine technology, with each advancement aimed at enhancing the power, reliability, and overall riding experience. From the early "F-head" engines to the modern Milwaukee-Eight, each generation of Harley engines has brought significant changes that have left a mark on the motorcycle world. These developments have allowed Harley-Davidson to remain a leading motorcycle brand, appealing to traditional enthusiasts and newer generations of riders.

    Early Engines

Harley-Davidson’s engine evolution began with the “F-head” engine, introduced in 1909, which provided reliable power for early motorcycles. This was followed by the "Flathead" in 1929, which became famous for its simple design and low-end torque, making it a popular choice for motorcycle enthusiasts. The Flathead laid the foundation for Harley-Davidson’s reputation for durable and rugged engines, a legacy that continues today.

The Knucklehead to the Evolution Engine

The introduction of the Knucklehead engine in 1936 marked a significant leap in Harley's engine technology. It featured overhead valves that improved performance. The 1966 release of the Shovelhead brought further enhancements, with increased power and better cooling. The Evolution (or "Evo") engine, launched in 1984, was a game-changer. It featured an aluminum head and cylinders that improved reliability and decreased engine weight. For many Harley-Davidson riders, the Evo represents the beginning of modern Harley performance.

The Twin Cam Era and the Milwaukee-Eight Revolution

In 1999, Harley-Davidson introduced the Twin Cam engine, known for its increased displacement and dual cams, which delivered smoother performance and more power. The latest chapter in Harley's engine evolution is the Milwaukee-Eight, which debuted in 2017. It features four-valve cylinder heads for better airflow, dual spark plugs for improved combustion, and reduced vibration, significantly enhancing the rider's experience. The Milwaukee-Eight represents how Harley-Davidson has blended traditional V-twin character with modern performance needs.

  • Harley-Davidson is not just a motorcycle brand—it’s an enduring symbol of American craftsmanship, freedom, and individuality. Founded in 1903 in Milwaukee by William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, the company revolutionized the motorcycle industry with designs that combined durability and performance. Over the years, Harley-Davidson bikes became synonymous with innovation, helping to transform motorcycling from a niche hobby into a cultural phenomenon. During World War II, the brand's role in supplying motorcycles to the U.S. military further solidified its place in American history.

Owning a Harley-Davidson today is like owning a tangible piece of that rich history. The iconic rumble of a Harley is instantly recognizable and evokes a sense of nostalgia and pride. Every model, from the vintage Knucklehead to today’s cutting-edge machines, carries the weight of over a century of engineering excellence. But beyond the mechanics, Harley-Davidson motorcycles are embedded in the American ethos—they symbolize the open road, the pursuit of adventure, and the freedom to carve your own path.

The cultural impact of Harley-Davidson took off in the mid-20th century, as the brand became a favorite among riders seeking to rebel against the ordinary. Movies like "Easy Rider" elevated the Harley to a symbol of counterculture and personal expression. The motorcycle soon became more than just a means of transportation; it became a statement of independence, non-conformity, and American spirit. Today, Harley-Davidson still holds a unique place in pop culture, representing a timeless way of life.

For riders, owning a Harley is about joining this legacy. It’s a connection to the past and a commitment to the brand’s values of freedom, craftsmanship, and innovation. Whether cruising down a local highway or embarking on a cross-country journey, Harley-Davidson riders are part of a tradition stretching back over 120 years—representing the heart of American motorcycling.

Purchasing your first motorcycle is an exciting milestone, but it can also feel overwhelming if you’re unsure where to start.

  • Whether you're gearing up for a long road trip or want to improve your daily ride, having the right motorcycle accessories can make all the difference; at Rod's Cycles, we know that the right gear isn't just about style but comfort, convenience, and safety. Here are some of our top picks for must-have motorcycle accessories, including trusted brands we stand behind.

    Saddlebags & Storage Solutions

Long rides or even daily commutes require reliable storage. A good set of saddlebags can help you carry everything from rain gear to tools without weighing you down. We're big fans of Viking Bags for their durable, weather-resistant saddlebags. Their designs balance style and function with options that complement classic Harley builds and custom setups. Whether you need complex or soft saddlebags, their selection offers something for every rider.

    Why We Recommend Viking Bags:
✔️ High-quality leather and reinforced stitching
✔️ Lockable options for added security
✔️ Sleek designs that integrate with your bike's look

    Protective Riding Gear

Riding without proper protective gear is never a good idea. A DOT-approved helmet is necessary, but don't overlook reinforced riding gloves, armored jackets, and weather-resistant boots. Please be sure to look for gear with CE-rated protection for impact zones and breathable materials for comfort on long rides.

    Navigation & Communication Tools

Getting lost is part of the adventure, but having a solid GPS or phone mount makes navigating easier. Brands like Quad Lock offer secure phone holders that withstand highway speeds and rough roads. If you ride in a group, consider a Bluetooth helmet communicator from brands like Cardo or Sena. These devices allow you to chat with fellow riders or listen to music without taking your hands off the bars.

    LED Lighting & Visibility Enhancements

Improving visibility—seeing and being seen—is one of the easiest safety upgrades you can make. Consider installing LED headlights, underflow kits, or auxiliary fog lights to enhance nighttime riding. LED turn signals and brake lights also make a massive difference in low-light conditions, helping other drivers spot you faster.

    Maintenance & Emergency Tools

Every rider should carry a basic tool kit for roadside fixes. At a minimum, consider packing:
✔️ Multi-tool or compact wrench set
✔️ Tire repair kit & portable air pump
✔️ Battery jump starter (especially for long road trips)

    Final Thoughts

Investing in the right gear makes every ride more enjoyable, whether cruising through the city or hitting the open road. At Rod's Cycles, we use quality accessories that enhance safety, comfort, and style. If you're looking for the best saddlebags, riding gear, or accessories, check out brands like Viking Bags and others we trust. Ride safe and keep your gear in check—the proper setup makes all the difference.
